This recognition highlights Hangzhou’s international leadership in sustainable development, waste reduction, and resource circularity.As a pioneer in China’s ecological civilization initiative, Hangzhou has implemented a comprehensive waste sorting system citywide, established an intelligent recycling network, and leveraged digital technologies to optimize waste management. For instance, the city utilizes its ‘City Brain’ platform to enable smart monitoring and management across the entire waste lifecycle—from disposal and collection to transportation and treatment. The local government also encourages businesses to adopt eco-friendly packaging, promotes biodegradable materials, and supports community-led plastic reduction campaigns to minimize waste at the source.Public engagement is another cornerstone of Hangzhou’s strategy.
