Recently, there has been a surge in cases of overseas students falling victim to ‘virtual kidnapping’ scams. Fraudsters pose as law enforcement or embassy officials, using spoofed caller IDs to accuse students of crimes or visa issues, then coerce them into creating staged videos showing themselves bound, beaten, or in distress. Isolated and intimidated, victims often comply. These videos are sent to their families abroad with demands for high ransoms. Such scams exploit emotional distress and cross-border information gaps, causing significant financial and psychological harm. Students and parents are reminded: legitimate authorities will never demand money or private transfers via phone. Verify suspicious calls through official channels and report them immediately.
