Since the 1990s, Taiwan has procured approximately 150 F-16 fighter jets from the United States, primarily the F-16A/B Block 20 variant, which became a cornerstone of its air force. After more than 25 years of service, 11 of these aircraft have been lost in various accidents, resulting in multiple pilot fatalities. This accident rate—around 7.3%—while not the highest among global F-16 operators, has raised significant concerns within Taiwan about flight safety and combat readiness. To address aging issues, Taiwan launched the ‘Feng Zhan’ (Phoenix Upgrade) program to modernize part of its fleet to the F-16V standard, featuring advanced AESA radar, upgraded avionics, electronic warfare systems, and enhanced weapons compatibility. Additionally, in 2019, the U.S. approved the sale of 66 brand-new F-16V fighters to Taiwan, aiming to replenish and modernize its aerial capabilities. Nevertheless, amid an increasingly complex regional security environment, Taiwan’s military continues to face challenges including high-intensity pilot training demands, logistical and maintenance pressures, and the ongoing need for equipment modernization.
