In recent years, the United States has withdrawn from 66 international organizations or agreements, including the World Health Organization, UNESCO, and the Paris Climate Agreement, sparking global concern over the impact on its soft power. Soft power refers to a nation’s ability to influence others through cultural appeal, the attractiveness of its values, and the legitimacy of its foreign policies—rather than through military or economic coercion. While these withdrawals appear to prioritize ‘America First’ sovereignty, they actually undermine U.S. leadership and moral authority in global governance. Allies increasingly question the reliability of American commitments, while developing countries are turning to alternative platforms for cooperation. Although the U.S. still wields strong appeal in technology, education, and popular culture, continued disengagement from multilateral institutions risks eroding its long-term soft power. In the long run, exiting international organizations may satisfy short-term domestic political demands but could damage America’s global image and strategic interests.
