Recently, China’s first stainless steel rocket ‘gigafactory’ officially broke ground in Hefei, Anhui Province. Led by Shenzhen-based commercial space company Deep Blue Aerospace, the project represents an investment of over RMB 10 billion and is designed to produce more than 20 reusable liquid oxygen-methane launch vehicles annually. The facility will employ end-to-end intelligent manufacturing technologies, integrating 3D printing, automated assembly, and smart inspection systems to significantly enhance production efficiency and reliability. As China’s first rocket production base primarily using stainless steel as its structural material, its flagship product—the Nebula-1 rocket—utilizes high-strength stainless steel alloys, offering advantages such as lower cost, high-temperature resistance, and ease of maintenance, aligning well with the trend toward reusable launch systems. The construction of this gigafactory marks a major step forward for China’s commercial space sector, accelerating its transition toward large-scale, industrialized operations and potentially reducing the cost of access to space while boosting China’s competitiveness in the global commercial launch market.
