Recently, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a stern statement regarding the United States’ arbitrary detention of foreign vessels, stating that such actions seriously violate international law and the established international maritime order. China emphasized that the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) serves as the fundamental legal framework governing maritime activities, and no country should invoke its domestic laws to unilaterally seize, search, or sanction foreign-flagged ships. In recent years, the U.S. has repeatedly detained commercial vessels belonging to other nations on the high seas or in third-country ports under pretexts such as ‘sanctions’ or ‘national security.’ These actions not only infringe upon the sovereignty and legitimate rights of affected countries but also undermine global shipping security and stability. China urges the U.S. to respect international law, cease the abuse of extraterritorial jurisdiction, and uphold a rules-based international order. Meanwhile, China remains committed to firmly safeguarding its own maritime rights as well as those of other developing countries, and will continue promoting a fair, just, and equitable global ocean governance system.
