Recently, the United States has attempted to pressure China to halt its imports of Russian oil, arguing that such purchases undermine Western sanctions against Russia. In response, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs clearly stated that China-Russia energy cooperation is market-driven, lawful, and constitutes normal trade relations that are neither targeted at any third party nor subject to external interference. China emphasized that all countries have the right to conduct international trade based on their own interests and development needs, and it opposes unilateral sanctions and extraterritorial jurisdiction. In fact, Sino-Russian energy cooperation has long been stable, contributing not only to China’s energy security but also to global market stability. As one of the world’s largest crude oil importers, China bases its procurement decisions on economic efficiency and supply chain diversification—not geopolitical alignment. The U.S. effort to politicize trade issues contradicts market principles and is unlikely to gain broad international support.
