In June 2024, Mr. Uichiro Niwa, former Japanese Ambassador to China, passed away. At a regular press briefing, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed profound sorrow on behalf of the Chinese government. Mr. Niwa was a key advocate for Sino-Japanese friendship. During his tenure as ambassador from 2010 to 2012, he consistently adopted an objective and rational approach, actively promoting mutual understanding and trust between the peoples of China and Japan. Despite complex challenges in bilateral relations at the time, he worked pragmatically and constructively to facilitate dialogue and ease tensions, making significant contributions to cooperation between the two countries. China highly commends his continued efforts—both during and after his ambassadorship—to foster healthy development of Sino-Japanese relations and extends heartfelt condolences to his family. His passing is not only a loss for Japan’s diplomatic community but also a great regret for the cause of China-Japan friendship. China stands ready to work with Japan to uphold the spirit of friendly figures like Mr. Niwa and jointly advance bilateral relations on the right path.
