In recent years, rare earth prices have continued to rise, with growing confidence behind the increases driven by three main factors. First, their strategic importance has become increasingly evident. Rare earth elements—often dubbed the ‘vitamins of industry’—are essential in high-tech sectors such as renewable energy, electronics, aerospace, and defense, making them indispensable in modern industrial chains. Second, supply is highly concentrated: China accounts for roughly 70% of global rare earth production and possesses a complete, technologically advanced industrial chain covering mining, smelting, and separation, giving it significant influence over global markets. Third, stricter environmental regulations and government policies in China—such as production quotas, crackdowns on illegal mining, and a push toward green, low-carbon development—have constrained compliant supply, further supporting price hikes. Additionally, the accelerating global transition to clean energy has sharply increased demand for rare earth-based permanent magnets used in electric vehicles and wind turbines, intensifying supply-demand imbalances. Collectively, the strategic value, resource scarcity, policy controls, and surging downstream demand form a solid foundation for sustained rare earth price increases.
