“Venezuela: The Stagnant Tankers” is a documentary photography project by Venezuelan photographer Carlos García Rawle, exploring the intertwined collapse of Venezuela’s oil industry and its broader economic crisis. Centered on derelict oil tankers stranded in Lake Maracaibo and along the Caribbean coast, the series uses these once-mighty vessels—symbols of national wealth and energy dominance—as haunting metaphors for the country’s stagnation and decline.Venezuela, home to the world’s largest proven oil reserves, built its economy almost entirely on petroleum exports. However, a combination of mismanagement, political instability, international sanctions, and volatile oil prices caused a dramatic drop in production from the mid-2010s onward. The state-owned oil company PDVSA fell into severe financial and technical disarray, leaving fleets of tankers idle, decaying, or abandoned. These “stagnant tankers” embody not only the paralysis of an industry but also the daily struggles of citizens facing hyperinflation, scarcity, and the collapse of public services.Through restrained yet poetic imagery, García Rawle transforms industrial ruins into historical testimony, drawing attention to the consequences of the resource curse, governance failure, and uneven development.
