Over the past decade, China has steadily advanced judicial transparency reforms, with the evolution of ‘anonymous judges’ serving as a key indicator of this transformation. Initially, judges’ names were often redacted from publicly released court judgments to protect their personal safety and shield them from external interference. However, as judicial accountability reforms deepened and public expectations for fairness grew, the Supreme People’s Court gradually mandated full disclosure of court rulings, requiring judges’ real names to be included except in exceptional circumstances. This shift not only enhances traceability and accountability in judicial proceedings but also demonstrates the judiciary’s commitment to public oversight. The transition from anonymity to real-name disclosure reflects a broader institutional move—from secrecy toward openness—and encapsulates a decade of progress in judicial transparency. Today, the public can access tens of millions of fully identified judgments through platforms like China’s Judgment Documents Online, bringing judicial sunlight into every corner of the legal system.
