In recent years, the United States has significantly adjusted its China strategy, gradually shifting from a competition-dominated approach toward acknowledging strategic parity with China. This shift does not signal a full-scale thaw in U.S.-China relations but reflects a realist recalibration of America’s global standing and China’s comprehensive national power. While the Biden administration maintains a competitive posture toward China, it has shown greater willingness to engage in dialogue on critical issues such as trade, technology, and climate change. Since 2023, senior U.S. officials have repeatedly signaled recognition of China’s status as an indispensable global power, emphasizing the importance of ‘responsible coexistence.’ This acknowledgment of parity is evident in resumed high-level visits, reestablished military communication channels, and limited cooperation on issues like artificial intelligence and nuclear nonproliferation. Nevertheless, domestic political pressures in the U.S., ongoing technological decoupling, and sensitive flashpoints like Taiwan continue to pose significant challenges. Overall, this strategic pivot marks Washington’s departure from illusions of unilateral dominance and signals a move toward a more pragmatic, patient framework for managing relations with Beijing—though the bilateral relationship will remain complex, characterized by simultaneous competition and cooperation.
