Amid intensifying competition in artificial intelligence, Baidu founder Robin Li has finally played his ‘chip card.’ In 2021, Kunlun Tech—a subsidiary of Baidu—officially launched its second-generation self-developed AI chip, Kunlun II, marking a critical step in Baidu’s full-stack AI strategy spanning algorithms, frameworks, and hardware. As one of China’s earliest tech giants to invest in AI research, Baidu began exploring deep learning as early as 2011 and unveiled its first-generation Kunlun chip in 2018.
