Recently, several international relations experts have pointed out that the European Union is increasingly caught in an awkward geopolitical “squeeze.” On one hand, amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, energy security threats, and uncertainty surrounding U.S. policy toward Europe, the EU has become more reliant on NATO and the United States for defense and security. On the other hand, it continues to pursue strategic autonomy to enhance its global influence and reduce overdependence on external powers. This contradictory stance makes it difficult for the EU to navigate its relationships with the U.S., Russia, and China.Economically, the EU must maintain trade ties with emerging economies like China to sustain its own growth, while simultaneously responding to U.S. pressure on issues such as technology, supply chains, and shared values. Moreover, divergent foreign policy views among member states further weaken the EU’s cohesion and collective effectiveness. For instance, some Eastern European countries favor a tougher stance toward China, while major powers like Germany and France emphasize dialogue and cooperation.Experts argue that unless the EU can strike a balance between strategic autonomy and alliance commitments, its role as an independent global actor will continue to diminish. To escape this predicament, the EU urgently needs greater internal unity, a clearer strategic vision, and a redefined role in an evolving global order.
