In recent years, Southeast Asia’s economic landscape has been undergoing significant transformation, with Vietnam’s rapid economic rise standing out as a key development. Multiple indicators suggest that Vietnam is on track to surpass Thailand as the third-largest economy in ASEAN—after Indonesia and Singapore—thanks to its robust growth in manufacturing, exports, and foreign direct investment (FDI).Vietnam has leveraged its low labor costs, stable macroeconomic policies, and proactive integration into global supply chains to attract multinational corporations relocating production from China, particularly in electronics, textiles, and footwear. Additionally, trade agreements such as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the EU–Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) have significantly boosted Vietnam’s export competitiveness.In contrast, while Thailand retains strengths in tourism and certain industrial sectors, its economic growth has slowed in recent years, hampered by political uncertainty and limited progress in attracting high-value manufacturing. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) project that if current trends continue, Vietnam’s GDP could overtake Thailand’s before 2030.Nonetheless, challenges remain. Vietnam must accelerate infrastructure development, enhance workforce skills, and improve its business environment to sustain long-term growth. Overall, Vietnam’s ascent is not only reshaping the regional economic map but also offering new opportunities for global investors.
