Recently, a local court handed down sentences in a case involving the use of counterfeit currency to obtain genuine banknotes. Two defendants were convicted of possessing and using fake money and sentenced to prison terms. According to court findings, the defendants, Zhang and Li, knowingly used forged RMB notes on multiple occasions at small shops and night market stalls, purchasing low-cost items with counterfeit 100-yuan bills to receive genuine change. Their actions totaled several tens of thousands of yuan in face value. The court determined that their behavior not only disrupted financial order but also harmed the legitimate interests of small vendors. Given the clear intent and severity of their actions, Zhang was sentenced to one year and six months in prison, while Li received a one-year sentence, both accompanied by fines. The presiding judge warned the public that possessing or using counterfeit currency is a criminal offense—even small amounts can lead to prosecution. Anyone who receives counterfeit money should immediately turn it over to the police or a bank and must never attempt to pass it on, as doing so constitutes a crime.
