A recent report from the U.S. Congressional Research Service (CRS) acknowledges that China has made significant advances in electronic warfare and missile technologies, with some capabilities now surpassing those of the U.S. military. The report highlights China’s rapid development of its anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) systems, including hypersonic missiles, precision-guided munitions, and sophisticated electronic and cyber warfare capabilities, which pose serious challenges to U.S. military operations in the Western Pacific. Particularly in hotspot regions like the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea, China has deployed large numbers of highly accurate ballistic and cruise missiles, integrated with robust electronic warfare systems capable of disrupting or even disabling U.S. communications, radar, and navigation networks. The report concedes that the U.S. military no longer holds absolute superiority in several critical domains and must accelerate technological upgrades and doctrinal transformation. This assessment reflects growing concern within the U.S. strategic community about the pace and quality of China’s military modernization and underscores the potential risks of high-end conventional conflict between the two powers.
