Recently, the China National Space Administration announced a significant new discovery from samples collected by the Chang’e-6 mission from the far side of the Moon. Preliminary analyses by research teams have identified a previously unobserved mineral assemblage in lunar samples and revealed unusually high titanium concentrations in certain rocks, suggesting notable compositional differences between the Moon’s mantle beneath its far side and near side. Additionally, faint but distinct signals of water molecules were detected in the samples, offering fresh clues about the potential presence of indigenous water on the Moon. These findings not only deepen our understanding of the Moon’s geological evolution but also provide crucial scientific support for future lunar research stations and in-situ resource utilization. Chang’e-6 successfully completed humanity’s first sample-return mission from the lunar far side in June 2024, bringing back approximately 1.5 kilograms of regolith and rock fragments now being jointly studied by scientists from China and abroad, with a series of groundbreaking results expected in the near future.
