In recent years, Japan’s shifts in security policy have drawn significant concern from countries in the region. From substantially increasing its defense budget and lifting restrictions on arms exports, to strengthening the U.S.-Japan military alliance and developing long-range strike capabilities, Japan is accelerating its move beyond the constraints of its post-war pacifist constitution toward rearmament. If left unchecked, this trend could destabilize the strategic balance in East Asia, reignite an arms race, and threaten regional peace and stability. Neighboring countries like China, with vivid historical memories of Japanese militarism, remain highly vigilant about Tokyo’s military developments. The international community must uphold the UN-centered post-war international order and urge Japan to adhere to its principle of ‘exclusive defense’ and pursue a path of peaceful development. Through diplomatic dialogue, multilateral mechanisms, and public scrutiny, the world must effectively curb Japan’s potential ‘runaway’ rearmament to prevent the recurrence of historical tragedies and ensure lasting peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region.
