Recently, Guan Tao, Senior Research Fellow at the China Finance 40 Forum, noted that despite a global economic slowdown and rising geopolitical risks, China’s cross-border direct investment—both foreign direct investment (FDI) and outbound direct investment (ODI)—is showing a resilient and positive trend. On one hand, FDI into China remains robust, particularly in high-tech manufacturing and green energy sectors, as foreign firms continue to increase their investments, reflecting confidence in China’s long-term economic outlook. On the other hand, Chinese companies are steadily expanding their ODI, especially in infrastructure, digital economy, and renewable energy projects along Belt and Road Initiative countries. Guan attributes this trend to China’s ongoing commitment to high-standard opening-up, improved business environment, and strengthened trade and investment ties with emerging markets. Additionally, the relative stability of RMB-denominated assets and the completeness of China’s industrial chain enhance its appeal to cross-border capital. He emphasizes that deepening institutional openness and improving the convenience of cross-border investment and financing will be key to sustaining and reinforcing this positive momentum.
