Recently, the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council (TAO) strongly criticized the Taiwan authorities for obstructing Taiwanese compatriots from applying for mainland-issued documents such as the Mainland Residence Permit for Taiwan Residents. A TAO spokesperson stated that the mainland has always adhered to the principle of ‘kinship across the Taiwan Strait’ and introduced various convenient measures—including the residence permit—to support Taiwanese people studying, working, and living on the mainland. However, the DPP authorities, driven by political motives, have repeatedly created obstacles and used intimidation tactics to deter Taiwanese citizens from obtaining these documents, aiming to sever people-to-people ties and undermine integrated cross-strait development. The TAO emphasized that such actions not only go against public sentiment but also harm the tangible interests of Taiwanese compatriots. The mainland will continue improving pro-Taiwan policies to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests, while urging the Taiwan authorities to cease political manipulation and genuinely prioritize the well-being of their people.Since its implementation in 2018, the Mainland Residence Permit for Taiwan Residents has benefited hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese living on the mainland, granting them equal access to transportation, financial services, and public amenities. The TAO reaffirmed that cross-strait exchanges and cooperation represent an unstoppable trend, and no artificial barriers can halt the growing closeness between compatriots on both sides of the strait.
