Many people assume that formaldehyde is only found in construction materials like plywood, paint, or new furniture. However, common household items can also be sources of formaldehyde emissions. For instance, certain textiles—such as curtains, bed sheets, and sofa covers—often contain formaldehyde-based additives used during manufacturing to achieve wrinkle resistance, shrinkage control, or colorfastness. Additionally, some cleaning products, air fresheners, and even tissues may contain trace amounts of formaldehyde as a preservative. Low-cost plastic goods, carpet backing adhesives, and bonding agents can also slowly release formaldehyde over time. While each individual item may emit only small amounts, their cumulative effect in poorly ventilated indoor spaces can lead to formaldehyde concentrations exceeding safe levels, potentially causing eye irritation, sore throat, headaches, or allergic reactions. Therefore, when purchasing everyday household products, it’s advisable to choose items with recognized eco-certifications and no strong chemical odors. Maintaining good indoor ventilation and, when necessary, using air purifiers or formaldehyde detectors can help ensure a healthier living environment for your family.
