Rhinovirus is the most common cause of the common cold, accounting for approximately 30%–50% of all cold cases. It spreads primarily through respiratory droplets or by touching contaminated surfaces and then transferring the virus to the nose or mouth. Symptoms of the common cold are usually mild and include runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, mild cough, and low-grade fever, typically resolving within a week.In contrast, influenza (the flu) is caused by influenza viruses (such as influenza A or B). Flu symptoms are more severe and come on suddenly, often featuring high fever, body aches, fatigue, headache, and dry cough. Influenza can lead to serious complications like pneumonia, especially in older adults, young children, and those with weakened immune systems.Although the common cold caused by rhinovirus and influenza may share some initial symptoms, they differ significantly in terms of causative agents, severity, duration, and potential complications. The common cold rarely leads to serious health issues, whereas influenza may require antiviral treatment or hospitalization. Additionally, effective vaccines exist for influenza, but none are currently available for rhinovirus. Therefore, frequent handwashing, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and maintaining good hygiene remain the best shared preventive measures against both illnesses.
