Recently, China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) publicly encouraged enterprises to actively participate in the OpenHarmony ecosystem and accelerate the adaptation of their devices and applications to this open-source operating system. This move is seen as a strategic step toward fostering domestically controlled foundational software and reducing reliance on foreign technologies.OpenHarmony, hosted by the OpenAtom Foundation and initially contributed by Huawei, is a distributed operating system designed for a wide range of scenarios—from smartphones and tablets to smart wearables, home IoT devices, and in-vehicle systems. The MIIT emphasized that faster enterprise adoption of OpenHarmony will help build a unified, secure, and efficient domestic OS ecosystem while enhancing collaborative innovation across the industrial chain.Numerous hardware and software vendors, chipmakers, and developer communities have already joined the OpenHarmony initiative. The MIIT stated it will continue offering policy guidance and technical support—such as dedicated funding, improved development toolchains, and standardization efforts—to lower barriers for enterprise integration and speed up ecosystem maturity. In the long run, this initiative aims to break the dominance of foreign operating systems in critical sectors and strengthen China’s influence in global digital infrastructure.
