Recently, in response to questions about how to restart cross-strait talks between the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) and the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), China’s Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) issued a clear statement. A spokesperson emphasized that the ARATS-SEF dialogue mechanism once played a significant role in promoting peaceful development of cross-strait relations, and its resumption must be based on adherence to the one-China principle and the ‘1992 Consensus.’ Currently, cross-strait relations face complex challenges, primarily because the DPP authorities refuse to recognize the ‘1992 Consensus,’ thereby undermining the political foundation necessary for resuming talks and causing the dialogue mechanism to remain suspended. The TAO stressed that as long as the Taiwan side is willing to acknowledge the historical facts and accept the ‘1992 Consensus’—which embodies the one-China principle—the two sides can resume contact and negotiations under this shared political framework. Such a move would not only help address practical concerns of people on both sides but also contribute to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. The mainland consistently upholds the concept of ‘one family across the strait’ and remains committed to pursuing peaceful reunification with the utmost sincerity and effort, while firmly opposing any form of Taiwan secession. Therefore, the key to restarting the ARATS-SEF dialogue lies in whether the Taiwan authorities are willing to return to the correct path based on the one-China principle.
