Recently, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council issued a stern response to the so-called ’17 strategies’ proposed by Taiwan’s leader Lai Qingde, clearly stating that these measures are another manifestation of separatist ‘Taiwan independence’ activities. The spokesperson emphasized that while these strategies are cloaked in rhetoric about ‘democracy’ and ‘peace,’ they actually aim to gradually advance ‘de-sinicization’ and seek ‘Taiwan independence’ with U.S. support, severely undermining the peaceful development of cross-strait relations.The spokesperson reaffirmed that the one-China principle is the universal consensus of the international community and the political foundation of cross-strait relations. Any attempt to challenge China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity is unpopular and destined to fail. The mainland consistently adheres to the basic policy of ‘peaceful reunification and one country, two systems,’ but will never allow Taiwan to secede from China.The Taiwan Affairs Office urged the Taiwan authorities to recognize the prevailing historical trend, abandon their ‘Taiwan independence’ stance, and return to the right path of peaceful cross-strait development. Meanwhile, the mainland will continue deepening integrated cross-strait development, enhancing the well-being of compatriots on both sides, and jointly advancing the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
