Recently, a highly publicized ‘fake heiress marriage fraud case’ concluded its first-instance trial. The court found the defendant, surnamed Li (a pseudonym), guilty of posing as a wealthy heiress by fabricating her identity and falsifying asset documents to marry the victim and subsequently defraud him of over RMB 800,000 within a short period after their marriage. The court ruled that Li’s actions constituted fraud and sentenced her to four years and six months in prison, along with a fine of RMB 100,000. According to prosecutors, Li had neither an affluent family background nor a stable income but meticulously crafted a ‘rich, beautiful, and refined’ online persona on social media to gain the trust of multiple men. One victim married her, only for Li to quickly demand large sums of money under pretexts such as investments and medical treatment before disappearing. This case highlights the risks of identity fraud in the digital age and serves as a warning for individuals to verify their partners’ backgrounds carefully in romantic relationships. Li did not appeal in court, though the statutory appeal period is still ongoing.
