Recently, the Iranian government publicly accused the United States of committing ‘crimes against humanity’ through its economic sanctions. Iran argues that these sanctions severely restrict its access to essential medical supplies, food, and humanitarian aid, causing significant harm to ordinary citizens—particularly during public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, which exacerbated humanitarian conditions. The Iranian Foreign Ministry emphasized that such sanctions not only violate principles of international law but also contravene UN standards on protecting civilians’ fundamental human rights. Under the Rome Statute, crimes against humanity involve acts such as murder, extermination, enslavement, or deportation when committed as part of a widespread or systematic attack against a civilian population. Iran contends that the U.S.’s long-standing, comprehensive sanctions amount to collective punishment of the Iranian people and align with certain legal elements of crimes against humanity. While the international community remains divided on this issue—with some countries and human rights organizations criticizing the sanctions’ collateral damage on civilians—the U.S. maintains that its measures aim to curb Iran’s nuclear program and regional influence, noting that humanitarian goods are exempt. Although Iran has not yet filed a formal case with the International Criminal Court, its public accusation seeks to leverage international legal and public opinion pressure to gain broader support.
