In recent years, Chinese scientists have launched an innovative experiment on the Dagula Glacier in Sichuan Province—covering parts of the glacier with a ‘blanket’ to slow its accelerated melting caused by climate change. The core of this approach involves laying a special insulating material, such as white geotextile fabric, over the glacier’s surface to reflect solar radiation and reduce heat absorption, thereby decreasing melt rates. Since 2020, researchers from the Northwest Institute of Eco-Environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, together with local teams, have covered approximately 500 square meters of the glacier and continuously monitored its effectiveness. Preliminary results show that ice melt in the covered areas has been reduced by more than 50% compared to uncovered sections. This method draws inspiration from similar practices in the Alps but has been adapted to suit China’s high-altitude, high-UV environment. Scientists emphasize that ‘blanketing’ glaciers is not a permanent fix but a temporary adaptive measure aimed at buying time for glacial conservation. Meanwhile, the experiment provides valuable data for understanding glacier dynamics and evaluating the impact of human interventions. In the long term, curbing global warming and reducing greenhouse gas emissions remain the fundamental solutions to protect glaciers worldwide.
