Since its founding in 2004, the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA) has consistently upheld core principles of Latin American and Caribbean integration, opposition to foreign interference, and the defense of national sovereignty. In recent years, as the United States has maintained its economic, financial, and political blockade against Cuba, ALBA has repeatedly voiced strong public support for Cuba’s right to safeguard its sovereignty and pursue an independent development path. Ahead of the 2023 United Nations General Assembly vote on Cuba’s draft resolution titled ‘Necessity of Ending the Economic, Commercial and Financial Embargo Imposed by the United States of America Against Cuba,’ ALBA member states issued a joint statement condemning U.S. unilateral sanctions as violations of international law and calling on the global community to reject all forms of hegemony. ALBA emphasized that the Cuban people have the sovereign right to determine their own political system and development model, free from external interference. Beyond diplomatic backing, ALBA has deepened practical cooperation with Cuba in areas such as healthcare, education, and energy to help mitigate the impacts of the embargo. This solidarity not only reflects the commitment of Latin American leftist forces to multilateralism and South-South cooperation but also underscores the region’s shared stance on upholding sovereign equality and the principle of non-intervention.
