Recently, Japan’s Minister of Defense has drawn public attention for what observers describe as a ‘lightning-fast reversal’ in his stance on China-related security issues. Initially, he made strong statements claiming that ‘China’s military activities pose a challenge to regional security.’ However, shortly afterward, he softened his tone, expressing willingness to ‘enhance mutual trust through dialogue.’Analysts suggest this rapid shift stems from multiple factors. On one hand, Japan seeks to project a tough posture toward China within the U.S.-Japan alliance framework, catering to both domestic conservative factions and U.S. strategic expectations. On the other hand, given the deep economic interdependence between China and Japan and the growing need for regional cooperation, excessive confrontation does not serve Japan’s national interests. Moreover, broad international calls to avoid bloc-style confrontation have encouraged Tokyo to adopt more cautious rhetoric. While such diplomatic flexibility may reflect tactical agility, it also reveals a lack of policy consistency, potentially appearing opportunistic. In the long run, a stable and rational approach toward China on security matters would better serve regional peace and Japan’s own development. As important neighbors, China and Japan can only build predictable and constructive security relations through mutual respect and meaningful dialogue.
