During winter, many households use gas water heaters, coal stoves, or electric heaters for warmth. However, doctors warn that using certain heating devices—especially combustion-based ones like gas burners, charcoal fires, or coal stoves—in poorly ventilated, enclosed spaces can easily lead to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and highly toxic gas. When inhaled, it binds to hemoglobin in the blood, blocking oxygen delivery throughout the body and potentially causing unconsciousness or even death. Therefore, it’s crucial to ensure proper ventilation when using such heating methods. Even in cold weather, experts recommend opening windows for 5–10 minutes every 1–2 hours to allow fresh air circulation and reduce the risk of harmful gas buildup. Installing a carbon monoxide detector is another effective preventive measure.Doctors strongly emphasize that if anyone experiences symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, fatigue, or confusion, they should immediately turn off the heating device, open windows for ventilation, evacuate the area, and seek medical attention promptly. Staying warm should never come at the cost of health or safety.
