In recent years, the concept of ‘third-generation fruits’ has gradually entered public awareness. These fruits refer to wild or semi-wild species that have not yet been widely commercialized but possess exceptional nutritional value, unique flavors, or potential medicinal benefits. Compared to first-generation fruits (traditional varieties like apples, pears, and peaches) and second-generation fruits (recently popularized types such as blueberries, kiwifruit, and dragon fruit), third-generation fruits emphasize functionality, rarity, and ecological adaptability.Typical examples include sea buckthorn, aronia berry (black chokeberry), cili fruit (Rosa roxburghii), emblic leafflower (Phyllanthus emblica), and goji berries. These fruits are often rich in antioxidants, vitamin C, and polyphenolic compounds, and are believed to boost immunity, slow aging, and even support the management of chronic diseases. For instance, cili fruit contains dozens of times more vitamin C than lemons, while sea buckthorn—dubbed the ‘king of vitamin C’—is also abundant in unsaturated fatty acids and flavonoids.Despite their promising potential, third-generation fruits face challenges in commercialization, including immature cultivation techniques, difficult harvesting, tart or astringent taste profiles, and low consumer awareness. Researchers and agribusinesses are now working on breeding improvements and value-added processing—such as juices, powders, and dietary supplements—to bring these fruits to mainstream markets. As health-conscious eating gains popularity, third-generation fruits are poised to become a significant part of future functional foods.
