Recently, China’s first ‘Flying Car Joint Laboratory,’ dedicated to the research and development of flying car technologies, was officially inaugurated. Established through a collaboration among leading universities, tech companies, and aerospace manufacturers, the lab aims to integrate multidisciplinary resources to advance innovation and implementation of low-altitude intelligent transportation systems. Its research will focus on key technologies such as electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, intelligent flight control systems, high-energy-density batteries, and urban air traffic management. The lab will also explore airworthiness certification, safety standards, and operational models for Urban Air Mobility (UAM). As the low-altitude economy has been designated a national strategic emerging industry, flying cars are increasingly seen as a vital component of future three-dimensional urban transportation. The launch of this joint laboratory marks a critical step in accelerating the transition from conceptual validation to engineering and industrialization in China’s flying car sector, potentially offering a Chinese solution to global urban air mobility challenges.
