China’s ‘Sky Eye’—the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), located in Guizhou Province—is currently the world’s largest and most sensitive single-dish radio telescope. Recently, the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced that FAST is set to undergo a major technical upgrade aimed at significantly enhancing its observational capabilities and research efficiency. The upgrade will focus on optimizing the receiver systems, data processing platforms, and observation scheduling algorithms, enabling more powerful contributions in cutting-edge fields such as pulsar detection, neutral hydrogen sky surveys, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). For instance, new multi-beam receivers will greatly expand observational coverage and sensitivity, while AI-driven data processing systems will enable faster and more accurate identification of cosmic signals. Since its commissioning in 2016, FAST has discovered over 900 new pulsars, providing invaluable data for astronomical research. The upgrade is expected to be completed within the next few years, further solidifying China’s leading role in radio astronomy and offering humanity a more powerful tool to explore the mysteries of the universe.
