Recently, Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport announced that its cargo and mail throughput surpassed 736,000 metric tons in 2023, setting a new record. This achievement not only underscores Shuangliu Airport’s role as a key air cargo hub in western China but also highlights Chengdu’s growing strategic importance under national initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative and the Western Land-Sea New Passage. Although passenger operations have been partially shifted to the newer Tianfu International Airport in recent years, Shuangliu has successfully pursued a ‘passenger and cargo dual-development’ strategy—continuously upgrading cargo infrastructure, improving customs clearance efficiency, and expanding its international freighter network—to achieve robust growth in air cargo despite challenges. The airport now operates multiple dedicated international cargo routes connecting key markets in Europe, North America, and Southeast Asia, providing efficient logistics support for high-value goods like electronics and biopharmaceuticals. Looking ahead, Shuangliu Airport aims to further integrate aviation with local industries and strengthen collaboration with platforms such as comprehensive bonded zones and cross-border e-commerce pilot zones, reinforcing Chengdu’s position as a global air cargo gateway.
