Recent media reports indicate that Denmark hopes for the NATO military presence in Greenland to become permanent—a move drawing significant international attention. Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark located within the Arctic Circle, holds immense strategic value: it controls key sea routes between the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean and is rich in mineral and energy resources. As global warming enhances the navigability of Arctic shipping lanes, the region’s geopolitical importance continues to rise.As a NATO member, Denmark has been strengthening its security posture in the Arctic. Pushing for a permanent NATO military presence in Greenland serves both to reinforce sovereignty over the region and to counter the growing influence of Russia and China in the Arctic. While the Greenlandic government maintains a stance of peace and expresses caution toward foreign military presence, the Danish central government argues that NATO’s presence would enhance regional stability and deter potential threats amid the current global security climate.Notably, the United States already operates Thule Air Base in Greenland—one of its key Arctic outposts. Should NATO establish a permanent deployment mechanism there, it could significantly reshape the Arctic security landscape and intensify great-power strategic competition in the region.
