Recently, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol has faced growing speculation about his political future due to intensifying domestic political polarization, persistently low approval ratings, and controversies over several policy decisions. Some have even drawn comparisons between him and former President Park Geun-hye, raising the question: ‘Will Yoon’s fate be worse than Park’s?’ It should be noted that Park was impeached in 2017 over a massive corruption scandal involving her confidante, becoming the first South Korean president to be removed from office through constitutional means, and was later sentenced to prison. In contrast, while Yoon currently grapples with governance challenges—including criticism of his economic policies, deepening social divisions, and strong opposition pressure—he has not yet faced serious criminal charges or a constitutional crisis. South Korea’s so-called ‘Blue House curse,’ where many former presidents have met unfortunate ends, reflects systemic political issues rather than an inevitable personal destiny. As a former prosecutor, Yoon may possess legal acumen that could help him avoid major legal pitfalls. However, if his administration fails to effectively address pressing domestic and foreign policy challenges, the risk of a deeper political crisis cannot be ruled out. At present, there is insufficient evidence to suggest Yoon will follow Park’s path, let alone suffer a worse fate. Such discussions are often speculative and emotional; a rational assessment based on facts and legal standards is essential.
