汽车公司未迎来预想中的“开门红”

Since the beginning of 2024, many automakers have failed to achieve the anticipated ‘strong start’ to the year. Despite widespread expectations before the Chinese New Year that consumer sentiment would rebound and pent-up demand for vehicles would be unleashed, actual sales figures have fallen short. According to data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), January passenger vehicle retail sales saw only modest year-over-year growth but a significant month-over-month decline, with some major brands even reporting year-over-year drops. Three main factors contributed to this outcome: first, consumer confidence has not fully recovered, leading to more cautious purchasing decisions; second, intensifying competition in the new energy vehicle (NEV) market has triggered prolonged price wars, squeezing profit margins and disrupting product launch schedules; and third, the high sales base from the same period last year, combined with an earlier-than-usual Lunar New Year holiday, shortened the effective selling window. Additionally, many automakers continue to face challenges in their transition toward electrification, including technological hurdles, supply chain constraints, and distribution network development. Industry experts note that China’s auto market is shifting from rapid expansion to high-quality growth, requiring companies to focus on product competitiveness, customer experience, and long-term strategy rather than short-term promotions or policy-driven boosts. In the coming months, as new models roll out and government incentives like trade-in programs take effect, the market is expected to gradually stabilize and recover.
