院士:全球聚变投资呈现中美两个中心

Recently, several Chinese academicians have publicly noted that global investment in nuclear fusion energy is increasingly forming a ‘dual-center’ pattern centered on China and the United States. This observation is based on significant progress made by both countries in recent years in fusion technology R&D, private-sector involvement, and government funding.In the U.S., private fusion companies such as Commonwealth Fusion Systems and TAE Technologies have attracted billions of dollars in venture capital, while the federal government has strengthened support through initiatives like the Fusion Energy Strategy. Meanwhile, China has continually set new operational records with its ‘artificial sun’ EAST device, launched planning for the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR), and actively encouraged private investment in fusion innovation. The nation’s 14th Five-Year Plan explicitly identifies fusion energy as a key frontier technology priority.Experts believe that while China and the U.S. differ in their chosen fusion approaches, technical pathways, and industrial ecosystems, both are accelerating the global transition of fusion from scientific exploration toward commercial application. This dual-center dynamic not only enhances overall R&D efficiency but also provides strong momentum for building a future clean energy system. Amid growing international collaboration and competition, fusion energy is expected to achieve grid connection by mid-century, becoming a cornerstone in the pursuit of carbon neutrality.
