In recent years, China has made significant progress in nuclear fusion energy, with multiple research institutions and companies accelerating the transition of fusion technology from experimental stages toward commercial application. Industry experts predict that China’s fusion industry could achieve initial commercialization around 2030. This milestone is driven by the nation’s strong strategic focus on clean energy, sustained R&D investment, and breakthroughs from major scientific infrastructures such as the EAST (Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak), often dubbed the “artificial sun.” In 2023, EAST set a world record by sustaining high-confinement plasma for over 400 seconds, providing critical data for future steady-state fusion reactors. China is also an active participant in the international ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) project and is advancing its domestic CFETR (China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor) to bridge the gap between experimental research and commercial power generation. With growing private investment and supportive policies, a number of fusion startups are emerging, exploring innovative approaches like compact fusion devices. If current momentum continues, China could become one of the first countries globally to deploy commercially viable fusion energy by 2030, offering a crucial technological pathway toward global carbon neutrality.
