Recently, rumors about ‘Didi Boat Hailing’ have sparked widespread attention. However, this concept doesn’t mean that Didi Chuxing is officially launching a water-based transportation service. Instead, it reflects users’ anticipation—and some playful speculation—in coastal or water-rich regions for new mobility options. Currently, Didi primarily focuses on land-based transport, including ride-hailing, bike-sharing, and chauffeur services. That said, as smart transportation evolves and user demands diversify, some localities have begun experimenting with ‘on-demand water transport.’ For instance, in places like Qiandao Lake in Zhejiang Province and Sanya in Hainan, local companies or tourism platforms already offer app-based bookings for sightseeing boats, speedboats, or even water taxis—delivering a ride-hailing-like experience on water. While these services aren’t yet integrated into major mobility platforms, their operational model closely mirrors that of ride-hailing: on-demand dispatch, real-time tracking, and digital payments. In the future, if regulatory, safety, and infrastructure conditions align, large platforms like Didi might expand into water transport, offering integrated land-and-water mobility solutions. For now, however, ‘Didi Boat Hailing’ remains more of an internet meme and a vision of future mobility than an official product.
