Notably, Xi’an, designated as a National Central City, has significantly enhanced its comprehensive strength in science and technology, education, and culture, with its GDP approaching or even surpassing Tianjin’s in certain years. Meanwhile, Qingdao leverages its marine economy and openness, while Zhengzhou benefits from its pivotal transportation hub role and central position within the Central Plains urban agglomeration. Experts note that the criteria for determining the ‘second city’ should extend beyond GDP to include population size, innovation capacity, urban influence, and regional radiating power. Going forward, northern China’s urban landscape may evolve from a ‘Beijing–Tianjin dual-core’ model toward a more multipolar and competitive structure, making the race for ‘second city’ increasingly dynamic and multifaceted.
