By analyzing students’ on-campus spending behaviors through big data, these institutions can accurately identify those facing financial hardship and directly deposit subsidies into their campus cards or bank accounts—without requiring students to apply.This approach, often described as ‘quietly sending money to students,’ protects students’ privacy and dignity while ensuring timely and effective support. For example, institutions like the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Sichuan University, and Southwest Jiaotong University have long implemented such systems. They analyze data including cafeteria card transactions, library access frequency, and utility usage to detect signs of financial strain. When unusually low spending or excessive frugality is flagged, the system automatically initiates a disbursement.This ‘seamless aid’ model reflects both deep humanistic care and a commitment to educational equity. Many recipients report feeling touched and relieved upon unexpectedly receiving assistance, which eases their daily burdens without the stigma or stress often associated with traditional application processes. Currently, more than ten universities in Sichuan have adopted similar practices, with potential for broader implementation across China—ensuring that support reaches every student who truly needs it, quietly and effectively.
