Recently, the United States has once again wielded tariff threats against Denmark in an attempt to pressure it into ceding control over Greenland. Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, enjoying extensive self-governance, although Denmark retains authority over its defense and foreign affairs. In 2019, then-U.S. President Donald Trump openly suggested the U.S. might ‘purchase’ Greenland—an idea that drew widespread international criticism. Now, citing vague claims of ‘national security’ and ‘strategic resources,’ the U.S. is threatening to impose tariffs on Danish goods, effectively using economic coercion to advance geopolitical ambitions.Greenland’s location within the Arctic Circle makes it strategically vital, and the island holds vast reserves of rare earth elements, oil, and natural gas. As climate change accelerates, Arctic shipping routes are becoming increasingly viable for both commercial and military purposes, turning the region into a new arena for great-power competition. Washington’s move reveals not only its expansionist tendencies but also its growing anxiety over rising Chinese and Russian influence in the Arctic. However, Greenlanders overwhelmingly reject being treated as a commodity to be bought or sold, asserting their right to self-determination. The Danish government has firmly stated that Greenland is not for sale. The international community widely views the use of tariffs as a tool to interfere in internal and regional affairs as a violation of free trade principles and international law. Such unilateral actions risk further escalating global trade tensions.
