Recently, China Railway’s 12306 platform announced an expansion of its ‘Quiet Carriage’ service to more train routes and schedules. A ‘Quiet Carriage’ is a designated train car where passengers are expected to maintain a quiet environment—refraining from loud conversations, playing audio from electronic devices without headphones, and other noise-making behaviors. This initiative aims to meet the growing demand for a peaceful travel experience, particularly among business travelers, students, and those seeking rest during their journey.First piloted in 2020 on the Beijing–Shanghai high-speed rail line, the Quiet Carriage service has since been extended to major high-speed corridors such as Beijing–Guangzhou, Shanghai–Kunming, and Chengdu–Chongqing. Following this latest expansion, over 100 high-speed trains nationwide will now offer Quiet Carriage options. When booking tickets via the 12306 app or website, passengers can select seats marked with a ‘Quiet’ label, and the system will automatically assign them to the appropriate carriage. Railway authorities emphasize that while the Quiet Carriage encourages silence, it is not a strictly enforced regulation but relies primarily on passenger cooperation. Going forward, further refinements will be made based on user feedback to enhance the overall travel experience.
