Renowned Chinese nuclear physicist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wei Baowen, passed away on June 18, 2024, in Lanzhou at the age of 89 due to illness. Academician Wei was a pioneering figure in China’s heavy-ion physics and accelerator technology. Since the 1950s, he dedicated his life to nuclear research at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He played a leading role in constructing China’s first large-scale heavy-ion accelerator—the Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL)—which laid a crucial foundation for interdisciplinary research in nuclear physics, materials science, life sciences, and medical applications. Beyond his scientific achievements, Wei mentored generations of researchers and made indelible contributions to the advancement of nuclear science and technology in China. His passing is a profound loss to the Chinese scientific community, and his legacy of rigorous scholarship and selfless dedication will continue to inspire future scientists.
