Recently, the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau reported that on January 2024, a record-breaking low temperature of -47.4°C was recorded in Koktokay Town, Fuyun County, Xinjiang—marking the coldest reading this winter in the region. This extreme cold not only represents the lowest temperature in the area over the past decade but also approaches Xinjiang’s historical record low of -51.5°C set in 1969. Meteorologists attribute this severe cold snap to a combination of a powerful southward-moving cold front and clear-sky radiative cooling. Under high-altitude, dry, and cloudless conditions, heat rapidly escapes from the Earth’s surface at night, causing temperatures to plummet. Although winters in Xinjiang are typically harsh, such an extreme low remains unusual. Local authorities have activated emergency response protocols, enhancing heating supply, traffic management, and cold-protection measures for agriculture and livestock to ensure public safety. Residents, especially outdoor workers and the elderly, are urged to take precautions against frostbite and cardiovascular issues. This event has also reignited discussions about the increasing frequency of extreme weather under climate change, highlighting the need for stronger climate resilience strategies.
