Recently, tomato prices have surged significantly across many regions in China, with retail prices in some areas even doubling. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, this price hike is driven by a combination of factors: first, frequent cold waves last winter damaged greenhouse facilities in major production areas such as Shandong and Henan provinces, drastically reducing yields; second, logistics costs rose around the Spring Festival, coupled with heightened holiday demand; and third, some wholesalers and middlemen hoarded supplies, further tightening market availability. Experts note that as temperatures rise in spring, the next harvest of tomatoes will gradually enter the market from late February through March, helping restore supply-demand balance and stabilize prices. Therefore, the current sharp increase in tomato prices is expected to persist until early March, after which prices should begin to decline. In the meantime, consumers may consider adjusting their diets or substituting tomatoes with other seasonal vegetables to mitigate the impact of short-term price volatility.
