According to the latest data released by the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO), approximately 186,000 Chinese tourists visited Japan in December 2023, a year-on-year decline of about 40% compared to December 2022. This significant drop has drawn attention to the pace of recovery in China–Japan tourism. Analysts attribute the decline to several factors: although China fully lifted outbound travel restrictions, consumer confidence has not yet fully rebounded, with many travelers remaining cautious about long-haul trips; the sustained appreciation of the Japanese yen has increased travel costs, reducing Japan’s price competitiveness; and the number of direct flights between China and Japan remains below pre-pandemic levels, limiting travel convenience. Additionally, geopolitical tensions and certain media narratives may also be influencing travel decisions. Nevertheless, with further visa policy relaxations and the gradual restoration of air routes expected in 2024, industry experts anticipate a steady recovery in Chinese tourist arrivals. Japan’s tourism sector is actively responding by enhancing Chinese-language services and promoting regional destinations to attract Chinese visitors back.
